Do you have your own or manage a business with little knowledge of bookkeeping, employed in the accounts department or you simply want to brush up on your past knowledge?

This basic bookkeeping and BAS course will take you through the process of completing your own set of books and generate a number of financial reports as well as finalising your own BAS.

This basic bookkeeping and BAS preparation course includes a case study featuring a business, which will provide students with hands-on practical experience to finalise a set of books and finalise all necessary reports. You will also prepare a Business Activity Statement (BAS) in a relaxed and stress-free environment.

 This course also helps you understand computerised accounting using MYOB/Xero

 1.       Principles of Bookkeeping, GST and BAS (theory):

o    Accounts Groups

o    Double-entry bookkeeping

o    GST overview

o    BAS Overview

o    Cash VS Accrual

2.       Setting up MYOB/Xero:

o    Chart of accounts

o    Bank Accounts

o    Contacts

o    Inventory

3.       Accounts Payable and Receivable (theory and practical)

4.       Fixed Assets and depreciation (theory and practical)

5.       Banking process:

o    Spend money

o    Receive money

o    Reconciliation

6.       Manual Journals and Year-end journals

7.       Reporting:

o    Trial Balance

o    Profit and Loss Statement

o    Balance Sheet

o    GST Reporting

8.       Business Activity Statement (BAS)


Outcomes

By the end of the course, students will be able to:

  • understand bookkeeping jargon

  • differentiate between the different types of assets, liabilities and equity

  • reconcile bank accounts

  • report their fixed assets and calculate depreciation

  • reconcile accounts payable and receivable

  • pass journals and post ledgers

  • generate financial reports

  • complete a BAS worksheet and finalise a BAS.

Basic Payroll using MYOB/Xero

  1.       Payroll legislations including:

o    National Employment Standards and the Fair Work Act (Modern Awards)

o    Income Tax Act (Tax thresholds, etc)

o    Superannuation Act (employers’ obligations)

2.       Standard procedures and forms for new employees in accordance to ATO requirements

3.       Setting up payroll and employee file/s

4.       STP (Single Touch Payroll) overview

5.       Regular Payroll process

6.       Payroll reporting including:

o    payslips

o    registers

o    summaries

7.       Obligatory reporting to ATO (BAS, PAYG summaries, etc)

8.       End of year payroll process

9.       Handle payroll enquiries

 

Outcomes

By the end of the course, students will be able to:

  • Have an understanding of the National Employment Standards, conditions of employment and modern awards

  • Distinguish between employment categories and employees vs contractors

  • Have an understanding of the payroll process and payroll components including allowances, deductions and penalty rates and loadings

  • Know the legal requirements of payslips and record keeping obligations

  • Have introductory knowledge of superannuation

  • Payroll Tax overview - what are payroll tax rates and thresholds for each jurisdiction

  • Set-up, process and manage payroll for a small business.
